If you butcher farm animals or hunt wild game – then you probably have loads of meat in the freezer. And when you want zesty homemade meatballs, meatloaf, burgers, or breakfast sausage – you need the best meat grinder. But – finding the best meat grinder is trickier than you think.

My favorite is the LEM Big Bite Meat Grinder. It has a reasonable price, and I also trust the company. Though this might be the best meat grinder to me, you might have a different opinion. You may need a meat grinder with a different style depending upon what you’re grinding and the size of your kitchen.

Best Overall
LEM 17791 Big Bite #8 .5HP Stainless Steel Electric Meat Grinder
$379.99

This LEM meat grinder is my favorite, even though it is a little heavy both on the pocketbook and it's around 30 pounds. The weight of the meat grinder is due to it being primarily stainless steel. The stainless steel build makes it durable and makes the heavy size forgivable, in my opinion.

Even the gears of this meat grinder are steel, which makes them less likely to break. That is likely why LEM feels confident enough to give you a 5-year warranty on this grinder too. I wish this meat grinder had a reverse feature for when it gets jammed, but that is probably my only complaint.

What do I like about the LEM meat grinder the most? All of the options for add-ons that you can get with it. True, these cost a little money themselves. All of the things that you can then do with your meat grinder make it well worth the option of having them, though.

Let’s begin!

  2. STX Turboforce 3000 Heavy Duty 5-In-1 Powerful Size #12 Electric Meat Grinder
    $169.75

This meat grinder is much lighter on both your pocketbook and in terms of actual weight. The smaller profile does make it slightly less durable, but you may not need a very durable meat grinder. It is simple to use, perfect for your home, and it comes with some handy-dandy tools as a bonus.

I liked that this STX meat grinder has a reverse function for any potential jams. However, I noticed that it seems to jam pretty readily - making this reverse function feature needed. I also noticed that the plunger was plastic. And, not very thick plastic at that. (They lose a few points here for flimsy materials.)

  3. PRO-CUT KG-22-W Meat Grinder, Stainless-Steel, 1 HP Motor
    $1,875.00

This meat grinder from Pro-Cut is ideal for commercial use. In other words, it is expensive, big, heavy, and meant to process whole cows or deer without a problem. At over 100lbs, you will probably need help putting this meat grinder where you want it during installation. But it is perfect if you open up your own butcher’s shop.

Here is the best meat grinder if you have a large family - and if they all want to use it! It has only a few add-ons and no reverse feature. But, in this case, it goes through the meat so effortlessly that I don’t think it needs a reverse cutting feature.

  4. LEM Products #10 Stainless Steel Clamp-on Hand Grinder
    $142.25 $129.45

Like most hand-crank meat grinders, this one clamps securely onto the edge of a table or counter. The clamp edges have protective sleeves so that you won’t damage your culinary goodies. It also has a couple of sausage stuffing tubes for you and a few different plates.

I like the durable stainless steel and the fact that it comes from a well-known company and has a great warranty. There's one thing I don't like about the grinder. The clamping part is too narrow! It doesn't grip thick counters properly as mine does.

  5. CAM2 304 Stainless Steel Heavy Duty Manual Meat Grinder #10 Clamp-on Hand Grinder
    $89.99 $75.99

This hand crank meat grinder looks almost identical to the LEM hand crank meat grinder at first glance. The CAM2 option is a little cheaper, but this comes at the cost of a shorter warranty. The company behind this meat grinder is also not as well-known.

Still, it has the covers on the clamp, which is still too small for thick counters, and some stuffing tubes. The opening at the top may not be as wide - but I love the durable stainless steel. The few plastic parts seem to be well-made, too.

  6. KitchenAid KSMMGA Metal Food Grinder Attachment
    $99.99 $76.99

This meat grinder attaches to your KitchenAid mixing machine. I loved that it comes in a set. The other parts are slicer and shredder attachments for slicing vegetables and shredding potatoes and other goodies.

It isn’t quite as durable as meat grinding machines go, so that is a disadvantage. Though not necessarily meat-related, the slicer/shredder component does not perform well on soft vegetables. So, you can forget trying to use it for things like onions, peppers, or cabbages.

I also wish there was a tray on top of the meat grinder component. That way, it would be easier to feed food into the grinder.

  7. Ankarsrum Original 6 Piece White Basic Meat Grinder Attachment Set
    $209.95

This attachment for the Ankarsrum mixer is more expensive than the other attachments. However, even at first glance, it looks super durable. It is pretty straightforward, but the instructions showing how everything goes together could use a little work.

It also doesn’t have almost any add-ons that you can get for it. So, while this meat grinder attachment is still a good option if you already have the mixer, it is not my favorite. The Ankarsrum meat grinder does have some hidden options, though. It has excellent plates and small parts for those with a discerning eye and a love for culinary hardware.

Best Meat Grinder FAQs and Buyer’s Guide

homemade ground beef meat grinder with pepper
Red pepper flakes, salt, pepper, and a dash of lemon or coconut oil are our secret ingredients to make your ground beef and sausage tastier – and zestier!

If you are only just now looking for a meat grinder, you may have a boatload of questions. These questions can affect what meat grinder you decide to purchase.

What Should I Look for When Buying a Meat Grinder?

With so many differences in meat grinders, this is a big question! But I will try to hit the highlights. First, consider the power source for the meat grinder you want. As the list shows, there is the electrical type, the manual type, and the attachment type, but I will get to that later.

As for functions, a reverse option is always good. Sometimes packing meat into the grinder just a little too fast will make the machine jam up on you. The ability to set it in reverse makes it so much easier to dislodge whatever might have gotten caught.

You also may want meat grinders that have the option of adding more add-ons to them.

Add-ons to a meat grinder can allow you to do all kinds of other things with your meats and dishes. Though these cost more, they make your grinder a multi-functioning machine that can juice, tenderize, or do other things

Electric vs. Mixer Attachment vs. Manual Grinders – What’s Best for You?

Electric meat grinders are the most common, and it is one of these that you are probably thinking about when you first thought of getting a meat grinder. Electric meat grinders tend to be the most powerful, are the fastest, and require the least amount of work

Meanwhile, attachment meat grinders aren’t as durable most of the time, but they take up less space and are sometimes cheaper than buying a whole electric meat grinder.

Manual types are more affordable and don’t require electricity. But they need a lot of muscle! Each type of grinder has its advantages and disadvantages, so which one suits you is entirely up to your needs.

How to Maintain a Meat Grinder?

Meat grinders mainly need to be cleaned carefully to be maintained. Some specifically say not to use any detergent on them, so this is something to pay attention to and consider. Clean the parts of the grinder well as soon after using it.

You also must make sure that you dry it off. Stainless steel grinders aren’t as likely to rust. But it’s possible for meat grinders that aren’t stainless steel to rust quickly if any moisture stays on them. Keep them dry – and clean!

Can You Grind Vegetables In a Meat Grinder?

The ability to grind veggies depends on the type of meat grinder. Some meat grinders will tell you to avoid putting vegetables in it. However, others will tell you that you can use it for certain vegetables, but you still can’t grind just any vegetables with them.

In general, the meat you grind is supposed to be frozen and hard to make it easier for the grinder.

Therefore, the vegetables that certain meat grinders let you do should be hardy as well. Soft vegetables like onions, cabbage, or peppers don’t work well. Even in the best meat grinders!

Conclusion

I don’t do much hunting, but I have friends that butcher their animals, so I can tell you that a meat grinder can be tremendously helpful. True, you may not use a meat grinder every day or even every week. Home ground meat beats the store-bought stuff every time on the grill, though.

While the LEM Big Bite Meat Grinder is still my favorite, perhaps one of the others is the right one for you. So, which meat grinder is right for you? Why don’t you get one and find out how useful it could be?
