1. Olight S1R Baton II

The S1R Baton II is a rechargeable side-switch flashlight that is extremely compact. It weighs only 1.76 ounces and has small dimensions of 2.48 x 0.83 x 0.83 inches.

Included with this flashlight is one CR123A battery that can be easily recharged with the use of an MCC magnetic USB charging cable. This cable is thin and compatible with other existing Olight products that are also MCC rechargeable.

My Olight S1R Baton 2 flashlight
My Olight Baton 2. Still going strong after using it regularly for three years now.

What is cool about this flashlight is that it has an output of 1,000 lumens, which means it maintains significant brightness.

Also noteworthy is that once the light is turned on, the power indicator that is in the center of the side-switch will show three different colors (green, yellow, and red) for its power levels. This reminds you to recharge the flashlight’s battery when you need to.

My Olight S1R Baton 2 flashlight, fits in the palm of your hand.
This is my favorite ‘around the farm‘ light. It’s so light, you don’t notice it in your pocket. And it puts out an incredible amount of light!

This little flashlight is my favorite – it’s tiny and lightweight so it fits into your pocket easily (you barely notice it’s there!). It has a belt clip too + a lanyard to loop around your wrist. It’s surprisingly bright for such a small flashlight with several brightness settings.

I quite like the “stun” light as well – a ridiculously bright flashing light that would blind any attacker. I haven’t had to use this setting yet, but it’s a great one to have. Another thing I love is the magnetic back. You can genuinely stick this to any metal surface for hands-free light!

2. Olight Arkfeld UV Flashlight

The rechargeable Olight Arkfeld is the perfect size and shape for any pocket or purse, which won it second place.

But don’t let its slim body fool you. This flashlight is very heavy-duty, and it can take big drops without cracking or breaking (believe me, I’ve tested it!).

When it comes to the actual light, this thing has 1,000 lumens of pure blinding power. However, with five different settings, you can decide how bright your night will be.

The battery lasts up to 8 days – yes, with continuous use. However, that’s only on the lowest 1-lumen setting. When running it at 1000 lumens, it will only last 4 minutes.

So, you can choose exactly how long you want to run your flashlight based on the settings you use.

It also comes with a UV light setting, making it easy to check your car for oil leaks or discover hidden body fluids in your next hotel room (although I recommend you don’t!).

3. Fenix E30R 1600 Lumen Flashlight

If you look for a pocket flashlight that defines the meaning of long-lasting, then this one made by Fenix would be a great candidate.

The specifications of this little guy are amazing!

It utilizes a Luminus SST40 LED that has a lifespan of up to 50,000 hours. The simplistic all-in-one switch operation of this flashlight can win you over if you value convenience. You press and hold on the side button for half a second to turn the light on or off.

You can also double-click the button within half a second to lock or unlock the light. It takes a single click to switch between five different output modes, which demonstrates the flexibility of this flashlight.

Turbo Mode packs 1,600 Lumens that lasts for 90 minutes while Eco Mode contains only 30 Lumens for a runtime of 70 hours and 30 minutes.

5. Olight S2R II Baton 1150 Lumen Rechargeable LED Flashlight

This flashlight has a comfortable grip that features a multi-function side switch. There are 5 brightness levels on this flashlight, and it has a USB charging cable. There is also a battery indicator which is located on the side switch. The standard green, yellow and red colors are used to indicate how much power the battery has left.

The unique thing about this flashlight is that it has a flat tail cap containing a strong magnet. This can free your hands from using the flashlight altogether if you wish, and instead stick the light on a metal surface.

Olight created a flashlight that is easy to turn on and off. Press the switch and let go to turn it off. Press it again and it comes on at the light level at which you turned it off. If you don’t mind spending around $70, you will get great value in this pocket flashlight.

8. Klarus XT11GT Rechargeable Flashlight

This small flashlight has 5 different light modes to choose from, and its maximum light output of 2,000 Lumens for its Turbo Mode is certainly noteworthy. Its maximum beam distance of 316 meters is suitable for your needs if you are an outdoor enthusiast.

What I find cool about this flashlight is its patented Triple-Switch control design which allows you to toggle between 3 different settings.

When it’s off, you hold the side switch for 10 seconds, and after the light goes to low mode and flickers you click to switch settings.

Tactical, outdoor, and advanced tactical are the settings.

Also helpful is its compatibility with two different battery types. The Klarus flashlight can either be powered by CR123A batteries or protected 18650 Li-ion batteries.

The Klarus XT11GT rechargeable flashlight is an example of a somewhat misleading Lumens measurement.

When you only use the Klarus 18GT-IMR31 3100mAh battery, its maximum light output can be 2,000 Lumens.

However, when using CR123A or Li-ion batteries the maximum light output can only be 1,300 Lumens. I will discuss a little more about Lumens later.

Klarus XT11GT Pro V2.0 3300 Lumens USB C Rechargeable Tactical Flashlight
$89.95

Upgraded XT11GT Pro Version: Brand new design from the inside out, update the tail switches, cancel the side switch, designed for more reliable tactical operation and use. Equipped with a CREE XHP35 HD LED, maximum output up to 3300 lumens, beam reach up to 410m.

9. Surefire G2X Tactical One Mode LED Flashlight

For a standard flashlight, you need something that works.

The Surefire G2X flashlight is a good representation of a tactical flashlight that can be used for everyday situations. It has a tough Nitrolon® polymer body that contains an anodized aluminum bezel.

You will get a secure grip of a flashlight that is resistant to scratches, abrasion, and corrosion. This flashlight is powered by two 123A batteries that are high-energy and have a lifespan of 10 years.

Its tactical tail-cap switch comes in handy as you press it for a momentary turning on, and then a twist for a constant on. It also has a respectable maximum brightness level of 600 Lumens. It features two output levels – high for maximum light and low for extended runtime.

SureFire G2X Pro Dual-Output LED Flashlight
$80.00

The G2X series share many features, such as compact yet powerful light, virtually indestructible high-efficiency LED emitters, precision reflectors, and tough Nitrolon polymer bodies. Two output levels—high for maximum light and low for extended runtime.

10. Fenix PD35 V3.0 1700 Lumens

One of the best and brightest tactical flashlights currently available on the market is the Fenix PD35. You can click on any of the images to see more photos of the flashlights and to buy them.

This flashlight can produce over 1700 lumens of very intense and clear LED light, and furthermore, it will last a long time before needing to be recharged. This is higher performance than many larger flashlights.

The flashlight bundle includes two rechargeable ARB-L18-2600 batteries. At under six inches in overall length, the PD35 can easily fit into a pocket.

One of the big selling points to the PD35, however, is its inherent durability. It’s built out of aircraft-grade aluminum with stainless steel components and an ultra-tough glass lens. It’s also waterproof at the IPX8 standard, meaning that it can be submerged in more than six feet of water for half an hour and continue to work.

11. Coast Polysteel 600R

The Coast Polysteel 600R is one of the more durable tactical flashlights on the marketplace today. It is designed for military and law enforcement use, and is so durable that you could literally drive a vehicle over it and it could continue to work thanks to its very strong crushproof design

This crushproof design largely results from the inner stainless steel core that is surrounded by a polymer nylon exterior. The Coast Polysteel 600R is also designed to survive being dropped over a hard surface such as concrete up to 10 feet, and it also has a waterproof IPX8 rating.

While the Coast Polysteel 600R is very durable, it’s also not quite as bright as the other options on this list. Granted, its 530-lumen output is certainly brighter than many other kinds of flashlights, it’s just not as bright as some of the other options.

The Coast Polysteel 600R can be powered either by lithium-ion batteries that can be recharged with a USB, or you can use 4 AA batteries for convenience.

Coast Polysteel 600R 530 Lumen Rechargeable LED Flashlight
$49.95

Virtually unbreakable. COAST POLYSTEEL combines a super-tough stainless steel core with a grip-textured poly-nylon exterior to build unimaginable strength into highly functional flashlights. Engineered to be drop-proof, these flashlights practically defy physics.

1. Best Overall – Streamlight PolyTac LED Flashlight

You will get considerable comfort with the amount of brightness this best flashlight under 50 provides. 600 Lumens on its highest level, 214-meter beam distance, and a 2.75-hour runtime on the high light setting make this a powerful option to consider.

(The runtime is either a positive or a negative thing, depending on how you value it.)

Its medium-light setting provides 260 Lumens, which is better than the highest level of brightness in other flashlights.

The PolyTac flashlight is powered by a pair of 3V CR123A lithium batteries that are supposed to last for 10 years, so it is safe to say that you will have a long-lasting flashlight here.

You can also adjust between 3 different programs as to what kind of light settings you want. The default program has settings of high, strobe, and low. This best flashlight under 50 can also fall as much as 3 meters without taking damage.

Durability won’t be an issue with the PolyTac.

Here comes the picky part of this flashlight review…

Be careful about which brand of CR123A batteries you get because not all of them respond well to the Streamlight. Don’t get Duracell CR123A batteries. Panasonic CR123A is said to perform better.

2. Best Compact – SureFire Sidekick Ultra-Compact Keychain Light

Appearances can be deceiving, especially if you are looking for a standard flashlight.

This is a keychain light to be sure, but it performs strongly like a standard flashlight. It is only 2.5 inches in length and is extremely light, weighing only 2 ounces.

This best flashlight under 50 has a maximum light output of 300 Lumens.

The medium and low levels of this flashlight perform the best. Delivering 60 Lumens on Medium, this flashlight has a runtime of 4 hours, and the Low level of 5 Lumens has a runtime of 45 hours

Recharging this flashlight is a piece of cake.

A USB charging cord is included with this best flashlight under 50, and you only need to keep the flashlight plugged in for 3 hours to achieve 90% battery capacity. The SureFire Sidekick can be charged either on a wall or in a vehicle, so you won’t be stuck to just one charging source.

I love this flashlight because it looks different and it dares to be creative.

However, it has obvious limitations…

The Sidekick’s maximum beam distance is only 66 meters, and it has only 3 different light modes. It is backed by a 1-year warranty, so if you aren’t happy with it you can return it without any hassle.

Definitely one of the best in our best flashlights under 50 review!

Best Pocket Flashlight Buyer’s Guide and FAQ

What Is the Best Pocket Flashlight for Home Use?

I would personally go with the Ledlenser MT10 or one of the Olight flashlights. By keeping a rapid focus on objects both nearby and far away, in the event that another home flashlight kicks the bucket, having something like the Ledlenser on hand would be ideal.

Because of its three brightness levels, you can adjust the Ledlenser to have one of those levels help you complete a task inside your home, such as fixing a broken appliance.

What Is the Best Pocket Flashlight for Outdoor Use?

Many of the flashlights on our list are excellent for outdoor use. One of my personal favorites is the Fenix PD35 for its toughness.

What Is the Best Pocket Flashlight Overall?

The Olight S1R Baton II is my favorite pocket flashlight. It’s tiny, super lightweight, and throws a whopping light beam. It has multiple light settings, easy one-handed operation, and a strobe light setting.

It’s an extremely high-quality pocket flashlight that has served me well for over three years now and I don’t go out without it.

See how tiny the Olight S1R is? A perfect EDC flashlight.

Getting the best flashlight for your nightly activities shouldn’t require spending too much money.

You don’t need a flashlight that has thousands of unique features, but you do need a flashlight that will help you get out of sticky situations. You just need something that works.

This guide will point you in the right direction.

What Do You Want to Use Your Flashlight For?

Video about the Olight S1R

For starters, choose a flashlight according to how you will use it. Assign a role to your flashlight for specific situations.

For example, if the power goes out in your home and you don’t have candles to light up, you can pull out your powerful flashlight.

If you enjoy outdoor camping at night, you will be using a flashlight very frequently, more so than you would at home.

If you go hiking on a trail at night, that is the perfect time to use a powerful best flashlight under 50 like any of the ones listed above.

Does the Number of Lumens Mean Everything In a Flashlight?

Simply put, Lumens don’t mean everything.

Each flashlight offers a Lumens rating that can sometimes be deceptive. The total capacity of a light is often rated, which is a rating the flashlight may not be capable of reaching.

Sometimes the result of higher Lumens means a higher price for you to pay, which is not what you should be looking for.

Plus, here is a little secret about Lumens…

Higher Lumens will reduce the lifespan of the batteries that are used in the flashlight. How’s that for a stunner?

Can You Prevent Significant Reduction In Battery Life?

It is always a good rule of thumb to charge your new flashlight battery overnight before you use it for the first time. This practice allows you to get the optimum capacity from the battery.

Unless it is about to be completely discharged, it is recommended not to recharge a battery.

What Type of Batteries Work Best for a Flashlight?

I am always partial to the standard AAA batteries when thinking of powering a flashlight.

However, the truth is that these are usually expensive since they will often need to be replaced. It is simply more convenient to get a flashlight that takes rechargeable batteries.

Many flashlights today have charging elements already built-in, so you likely won’t have to get a separate charger just for your rechargeable battery.

Proprietary batteries are the kind that typically can’t be removed. They are built into some rechargeable flashlights because they were specifically made for them.

If a Flashlight Lacks Certain Features, Should I Still Get It?

If you pay firm attention to details like whether or not a flashlight has a strobe mode, then that will impact your decision on which best flashlight to buy.

If you don’t care about features like strobe modes and emergency SOS capabilities, then many flashlights will come into play for you.

As another example, the type of switch a flashlight uses to turn on and off may catch your attention.

Do you want a traditional flashlight switch? Or do you like either pressing buttons or twisting the flashlight?

Should I Consider the Durability of a Flashlight?

The answer is absolutely, yes!

Especially if you intend to use a flashlight outdoors at night, you should have a flashlight that is designed to take bumps and bruises should you accidentally drop it.

If you leave it in heavy snow or rain, your flashlight should be able to still work once you retrieve it.

While I recommend finding ways to save money when purchasing things like flashlights, if you have to spend a few dollars more than you normally would to get something that will last for years, you make that move.

What’s Your Best Flashlight Under 50?

When looking for the right best flashlight under 50 you should always think about substance over style, and performance over visual appeal.

While it helps to have a flashlight that is strong in the number of Lumens, that feature alone shouldn’t make or break its overall worth.

You should first factor in both durability and longevity in a flashlight before reviewing its power.

The ideal best flashlight under 50 for you is one that won’t fizzle out after using it a few times.

Though this was a hard call for me to make, I end up leaning towards the Streamlight PolyTac flashlight as the winner of this best flashlight under 50 review for its overall variety in light modes and battery compatibility.

However…

I’d be more likely to spend another $30 or so to get the Klarus XT11GT. Klarus is an awesome, high-quality brand and this flashlight is packed with so many features, you’ll never need another flashlight.

What Is a Lumen?

You see the word Lumen used to define the brightness of a light, and for good reason.
The number of Lumens basically tells you how much light can be given out through a solid angle by a light source, such as a flashlight. Other measurements like Watts were used to indicate how bright a light was, but Watts should probably be used as a secondary way to measure brightness now.

How Bright Are 1,000 and 2,000 Lumens?

1,000 Lumens is a common level of brightness for residential homes, including bedrooms and living rooms. This amount of Lumens typically translates to a 65 or higher incandescent Watt light bulb.
The type of lighting you see in an office setting is normally around 2,000 Lumens. The purpose of this brightness level is to see the small details of a place throughout the day. The wattage of incandescent bulbs in translation would be 120 to 130 Watts of electricity per bulb.

How Many Lumens Do You Need in a Flashlight?

While packing a lot of Lumens is impressive for a flashlight, it is not always necessary to use a lot of Lumens for any activity.
Tactical and pocket flashlights used by soldiers and police officers, for example, normally deliver anywhere from 100 to 1,000 Lumens. If you keep that in mind, then you shouldn’t be too concerned about how many Lumens your flashlight should have for indoor and outdoor activities.
A high-quality flashlight like our best pocket flashlight today (Olight’s S1R Baton) is plenty bright enough for most of us. If you want a flashlight that is exceptionally bright, go for the Fenix E30R with 1600 Lumens.

What Does EDC Stand For in Flashlights?

EDC is an acronym that means “everyday carry.” As you can tell from the great list of flashlights, an EDC flashlight is a small tool you can carry with you anywhere at any time. No flashlight that is big and bulky should be considered to be an EDC flashlight.

Does the Type of Battery Matter in a Best Pocket Flashlight?

In the grand scheme of things, it doesn’t necessarily matter what type of batteries you use for your flashlight. However, if you have a firm preference for batteries being able to charge and recharge, you should buy a flashlight that will take such batteries.
Rechargeable batteries are more cost-effective for pocket flashlights because you won’t have to constantly replace them whenever the power runs out. While disposable batteries cost less initially, the amount of frequent replacing of these batteries can get tedious.
If you are only using a pocket flashlight for emergencies, disposable batteries won’t be too much of an issue.

Should Modes and Controls Matter in a Pocket Flashlight?

Small flashlights today have advanced past the typical off-and-on switch. If you work extensively on various projects, indoors or outdoors, then you would need a flashlight that offers multiple modes and settings.
Whether it is varying the levels of Lumens output or you are trying to light up a camping site with a sufficient glow, you need a flashlight that gives you options.
Especially look out for the inclusion of a strobe light setting, which can cover lateral movement. You will be immediately identifiable by moving left or right with a strobe light. Having a strobe light feature helps you in tactical situations such as conducting search and rescue missions.

What Should You Look For In A Tactical Flashlight?

You don’t just buy a tactical flashlight for tactical uses and you don’t have to be in the military or law enforcement to get use out of a tactical flashlight either. On the contrary, tactical flashlights are designed for literally any kind of environment that could put more stress on an ordinary flashlight.

A tactical flashlight is the type of flashlight you need as an EDC light to carry around in your pocket every day, to keep in your vehicle as a spare light, to take on camping or hiking trips, and so on.

To work well in these situations and withstand abuse whilst providing you with many years of high-quality service, the brightest tactical flashlight you buy needs to be built to a higher level than most other flashlights on the market are.

With that in mind, here are the top qualities that your tactical flashlight should come with.

  • Tactical flashlights need to be compact and lightweight. Ideally, your tactical flashlight will be small and light enough that you can comfortably carry it around in your pocket every day without noticing that you even have it on you.
  • Choose the brightest tactical flashlight with LED light. LEDs provide brighter illumination and for a longer period of time than other kinds of flashlights, while also requiring less energy and battery life.
  • Multiple modes. Modes like high beam, low beam, and strobe are important features.
  • Durability. Look for flashlights made out of aircraft-grade material, weather resistance, and impact resistance.
  • Waterproof. A rating of IPX8 would be sufficient for most uses.
  • Easy to operate. It should be easy to switch between different modes with a well-placed button that you can operate with one hand.
  • Long runtime. Look for a flashlight that has a long runtime on a single charge. Rechargeable flashlights may suit you, or you can look for a model with batteries that are easy to replace on the go.

Final Thoughts

While not having a pocket flashlight won’t make or break your outdoor camping experience, it would surely improve that experience if you enjoy performing activities at night.

If you need a small flashlight for indoor repairs, any of these flashlights listed above would give you enough help to work on repairs for hours. All of these flashlights are affordable and some have money-back guarantees, which will make it easier for you to give one of these guys a chance. You have nothing to lose when buying a small pocket flashlight!

    1. Hey there flashlight! Hmm, there’s definitely a place for having a light on your phone, but most of us probably aren’t looking for a disco light.. We just want something that shines a light on where we need to go – or maybe spot something out in the yard at night. I love the light on my phone but it definitely isn’t bright enough for my comfort, and it makes my phone go flat too. It’s great in a pinch, but I still want a really, really bright pocket flashlight. Thanks for your comment though 🙂
