They may not score a touchdown or a goal, but each brand has its standout features that you need to know before you buy.

We should examine Greenworks mowers first.

Sound good?

Weighing in at 74 pounds is this high-tech and efficient lawn mower from Greenworks.

There are two different types of battery this mower will take. You can power the mower with two 2.0 Ah batteries or one 4.0 Ah battery.

When fully charged, the Pro 80V has a beastly runtime of 60 minutes – you can’t balk at that longevity!

The mower also has 3-in-1 discharge capabilities, which is critical if you have a diverse homesteading operation.

You can discharge from mulching, a rear bag, or from the side.

You also have seven positions to work within its single lever height adjustment as it ranges from 1 3/8 to 3 and 3/4 inches.

The Pro 80V features SmartCut™ Load sensing technology, which means its power will automatically adjust depending on the height of your grass.

You get a brushless motor with plenty of torque, an easy push-button to start, a 21-inch steel deck, and a folding handle for vertical storage.

Overall, the Pro 80V appears to be a solid contender and a workhouse mower.

The only downside to this mower? You have to push it as there is no self-propelling mechanism, so if you don’t have much energy – you may want an easier mower!

What this lawn mower lacks in voltage makes up for in variety.

Its battery system is called “Twin Force” for a reason!

The mower effortlessly handles a combination of different battery types. You can either use one 4-Ah and one 2-Ah battery together or just one 5 Ah battery to power this mower.

This mower also boasts excellent maneuverability as it has a lightweight composite deck of 20 inches wide, 7-inch front wheels, and 10-inch back wheels.

The great thing about the 40V Twin Force is the dual steel blades, making it easier to cut, mulch, and bag.

The SmartCut™ Load sensing technology is also present in this mower, and you won’t have to worry about loud noises because of its brushless motor.

If you don’t like heavier mowers like the Pro 80V, the 40V Twin Force makes it easier for you to move it around as it weighs only 42.5 pounds.

You also get a solid warranty plan! The mower gets a 4-year warranty, and the batteries get a 2-year warranty.

One of the more affordable options on this list is this electric lawn mower.

The mower runs on a powerful 13 Amp motor, and it has the same 3-in-1 discharge capabilities as its brothers in the Greenworks family.

Its durable steel deck of 21 inches is enough to cover much of your yard with ease.

Though heavier than the 40V Twin Force, this mower is still lightweight at 53.1 pounds, so you can manage to move it through your yard.

However, the one thing you will notice that you may or may not be fond of is that this is a corded lawn mower!

Dealing with cords can sometimes be annoying!

If your yard has boatloads of trees and bushes to get around, then this mower may not be worth the hassle.

Spinning things back positively, you won’t be wearing out the batteries nor refueling any engines with this mower.

Running at its peak output, using this mower will only cost you 8 to 25¢ per hour, so this would be a cost-effective option to consider.

EGO Lawn Mowers

To fairly compare Greenworks vs Ego, we should also examine the EGO mowers in closer detail! And without hype or fanfare.

Let’s take a look under the hood!

Want 60 minutes of runtime on a single charge of a battery?

Then this EGO mower rocks!

The EGO Power+ 56V will provide that with the help of a 7.5 Ah ARC Lithium battery.

This beastly mowing mechanism has a high-efficiency brushless motor and has the 3-in-1 function of mulching, bagging, and side discharging – perfect if you want to start composting!

What you will notice about this mower right away is its Touch Drive Self-Propelled Technology.

The self-propelling action gives you the control you need to direct the flow of a mowing session.

The self-propel speeds of this mower are adjustable in a range between 0.9 and 3.1 miles per hour – fast enough to get the job done quickly, or you can take your time without stress.

The Select Cut Multi-Blade System puts this mower ahead of the competition as these two overlapping blades work together to improve the performance when cutting grass.

You can’t overlook how effective these blades are in gathering the targeted grass to chop them down.

You also get seven different positions for cutting heights so you can adjust the mower without fuss, ranging from 1.5 to 4 inches.

What’s not to like here?

The EGO Power+ 56V has some weight on it (75.8 pounds), and I’m personally not fond of the $499 price tag.

You can find other mowers around 56 volts that don’t cost nearly as much as this mower.

This Lithium-ion mower is almost like a twin brother to the Cordless Select Cut Lawn Mower, but there are a few differences to note.

Let’s get the downside out of the way already!

This mower isn’t self-propelled, and because it runs on a 5.0 Ah battery, you can expect a shorter runtime of 45 minutes – not 60 minutes.

Plus, you only have six different cutting height positions to choose from when you make adjustments, ranging from 1.5 to 4 inches.

However, there are plenty of things to like about this mower too! (Hooray for reassurance!)

It is lighter as it weighs 60.5 pounds, and the price tag is considerably cheaper as it costs only $370.

The relatively small size of this 56-volt mower from Ego makes it a smart choice if you want to get rid of a lawn full of weeds without too much fuss.

You also get a foldable handle that allows for compact vertical storage inside your garage.

The mower features a handy-dandy 3-in-1 function of mulching, bagging, and side discharging, just like all the other top-quality mowers.

The mower also has a balanced set of wheels with front wheels of 7 inches tall and rear wheels of 9 inches.

These wheels feature weather-resistant materials, so you have wheels that can plow through slightly wet grass if you must.

Power+ 20-Inch 56-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Walk Behind Lawn Mower

EGO Power+ LM2000-S 20-Inch 56-Volt Lithium-Ion Cordless Walk Behind Lawn Mower (Battery and Charger Not Included)

  • Battery and Charger Not Included
  • True 3-In-1 Function: Superior mulching, rear bagging and side discharge performance
  • 20" Cut Capacity: Cut more grass in less time
  • 600W, High-Torque, Magnetic Motor: Designed for gas like power at 3300RPM

Does 1 inch in cutting width make all the difference between this mower and its EGO brothers?

It most likely doesn’t, as this 56-Volt Lithium-ion cordless mower has a lot of good things going for it.

Weighing in at 56.22 pounds – this mower features a high-torque magnetic motor of 600 Watts. This motor also acts like a gas-powered mower motor, running at 3,300 RPM.

I love how convenient some mowers are if they have an easy push-button starting mechanism. This mower has one!

I also love the foldable handles that allow for vertical storage, and the LED headlights add a nice touch as they make it possible for you to use this mower during nighttime hours.

You also won’t need to worry about too much maintenance because you will only need to sharpen the lawn mower blade.

Now, for some bad news! (Yikes! Okay, it’s not THAT bad – but still worth noting.)

The battery has come into question by many user reviews!

Some reviewers claim they have had to change the battery three times, or else the mower stopped charging within the first three months of use.

At least with this mower, battery sizes make a difference as 5.0 Ah batteries perform better and last longer than 2.5 Ah batteries.

Tale of the Tape: Greenworks vs. EGO

Now that we have pitted three lawn mowers from both brands, we should break down the most critical categories and vital factors.

Which mower should you buy – if any?

It doesn’t matter whether your grass is thick, wild, and unkempt or if you laid a sod lawn last week – we’re going to look at every angle to help you pick the best mower with 100% confidence.

The comparisons in each category may be either very similar or completely different, depending on what features you value the most.

Power

If it is simply a matter of which lawn mower brand has more battery power, then hands down, I would give the edge to Greenworks.

Let me back up my answer!

The battery capacity of 80 volts delivers high-quality battery life as well as impressive power.

If you prefer corded mowers, the maximum capacity of 13 amps is still impressive for Greenworks mowers.

EGO trails behind in capacity with 56 volts of battery power.

However, if battery power isn’t the main determining factor for you, then you won’t notice the difference in performance.

It’s more like a “You say tomato, and I say tomato!” kind of debate.

Size

One of the main drawbacks of a lawn mower is if it is too heavy for you to push around.

Historically this has been a knock against Greenworks mowers, but as we will soon see in this comparison, the average weight between all of the listed mowers tells a different story.

We’ll break this down by combining the weights of all mowers for a single brand – and then dividing that total number by three.

That is what we will call simple math!

Crunching the numbers, it turns out that Greenworks mowers are 7.6 pounds lighter than EGO mowers.

The average weight among the listed Greenworks mowers is 56.57 pounds, and the average weight among EGO mowers is 64.17 pounds.

How significant is this difference in size?

It depends on how well you manage to push lawn mowers!

Do you prefer a light lawn mower?

Most of us do!

If so, then you should consider what Greenworks is putting out on the market first.

The edge in size goes to Greenworks.

(PS: A lot of our homesteading friends ask how they can grow a beautiful lawn QUICKLY. If you’re in the same boat, read our epic guide that teaches to grow a lush lawn using hydroseeding – in just three weeks!)

Durability

When comparing Greenworks vs Ego, you need to consider durability!

In my experience of using lawn mowers, I need something that will last me a long time.

The best lawn mowers endure even the toughest of mowing sessions and will keep working again and again.

After reading many reviews, it seems like most Greenworks mowers last five years without stress.

Even if their batteries highly demand recharging, Greenworks mowers can take the hits and keep going!

These puppies are tough!

However, Greenworks mowers also rely a lot on plastic parts, which may concern you.

On the other hand, EGO mowers are resilient, using only the sturdiest materials that won’t break easily.

The 56V Cordless Select Cut Mower is an excellent example of a durable mower!

The 56V Cordless Select rocks two cutting blades and looks like an epic tank of a mower – more than any Greenworks mower.

I give the edge here to EGO.

Adjustability

Here is where variety starts kicking in, which is something I value just under durability.

If I have enough options to adjust a lawn mower to the way I prefer, then I’m as happy as a clam during high water!

Height adjustments in grass cutting will play a role in whether or not you have a successful mowing session.

We can note the 6 or 7 different height adjustment positions for both Greenworks and EGO mowers, but how big of a difference is there between the brands?

The answer is that there isn’t too much of a difference that I can see!

For example, if you compare the Greenworks Pro 80V Cordless Push Mower to the EGO Power+ 56V Cordless Select Cut Mower, we would only be talking about a 1/4-inch difference maximum cutting height.

That difference shouldn’t make or break your decision on which brand to go with or consider.

Neither brand gets the edge in adjustability – it’s a tie between Greenworks vs EGO.

Cutting Options

You have noticed a reoccurring theme between all of the listed mowers.

Both Greenworks and EGO have lawn mowers with 3-in-1 cutting options. The mowers feature bagging, mulching, and side discharging.

Both brands recognize the importance of having 3-in-1 capabilities, though not every mower they make will have that feature.

We can call this a tie between the two brands in cutting options.

Convenience

Here’s something easy to overlook in a lawn mower.

I’m talking about the ability to make things convenient for you when you store tools inside your garage!

Whether you want a tiny electric string trimmer or a beefy commercial mower – convenience means the world to me.

EGO mowers can fold for compact vertical storage.

The folding mechanism is consistent with every version of EGO mowers.

However, Greenworks can’t guarantee you the same with all of its mowers.

A foldable handle is an easy feature to implement in lawn mowers these days – and it can also save you a ton of real estate in your garage, backyard, or shed.

There’s no justifiable reason not to have the handle fold for storage – therefore, EGO gets the edge regarding convenience.

Noise Level

The point of a battery-powered lawn mower is to make sure that it doesn’t give out any noticeably loud noises!

That’s the beauty of these mowers.

You can use a battery-powered mower at any time in the day or nighttime if you prefer – without annoying your next-door neighbors or waking up your family.

Both Greenworks and EGO do well in this category, so we can also call this a tie.

Warranty

Greenworks and EGO slightly differ when it comes to warranty plans.

EGO will offer warranties of five years on mower parts and three years on the battery.

Greenworks will offer warranties of four years on mower parts and only two years on the battery.

If you are serious about having the best warranty plan, then you go with EGO.

Not that Greenworks has a lousy warranty plan, but EGO’s warranties last longer – more bang for your buck.

Read More About Greenworks vs EGO for Warranty Service:

With any luck – your mower will last a long time so that you won’t need a warranty!

However, it’s nice to know that both companies are straightforward to contact if you encounter trouble during your homesteading ventures.

Price

It is clear which lawn mower brand wins big with more reasonable prices for their lawn mowers.

Greenworks mowers are far more reasonable in price than EGO mowers!

However, Greenworks may not stand as tall in warranty plans.

Breaking it down with simple math, combining the prices of all the listed Greenworks mowers, the average price for one would be $345.99.

EGO didn’t pass the test with the simple math, as all of its listed mowers combined for an average price of $436.31.

Especially if you are on a tight budget and you need to save up enough money for a mower that will get you through a season, you would have an easier time buying a Greenworks mower.

Trust me, I have had many mowers (both push and riding) kick the bucket on me over the years, and the process of saving up money for a new mower isn’t fun.

Take note of the prices!

Final Result – Which Mower Brand Wears the Crown? Greenworks vs EGO?

If you need a battery-powered lawn mower to get you through the damp days of spring and the hottest stretch of summer, which brand can you rely on the most?

Honestly, it is very close and tough to call!

If it were me, I would most likely consider Greenworks mowers first because they have more reasonable prices!

Greenworks also has mowers that are lighter and easier to manage.

I value warranties, but they don’t make or break deals for me when buying a mower.

Your situation may be different, though, and your mileage may vary!

If you are looking for premium build materials in the design of a mower, EGO pays more attention to those details.

You also get plenty of premium features on EGO mowers that you may find more appealing than Greenworks mowers.

But what about you?

What are your thoughts on this battle between Greenworks vs EGO mowers?

Do you own mowers from any of these brands?

What are your experiences?

  1. It’s ridiculous to me that a corded mower was included in this review. That is a totally different machine and mowing experience (I had one years ago and would never use one again). Using that as part of your data comparison makes this whole article biased towards Greenworks, like how the weight and price of the corded mower compare to battery models. In my opinion, someone included that to purposefully bias the overall review in favor of greenworks.

    1. Hi Sterling! Thank you for stopping by, and thank you for your feedback! Believe it or not, the Greenworks 13-amp model is very popular, which is why we considered it for this comparison. While I personally also avoid corded electric lawnmowers, based on customer service, reliability, and ease of use, I agree with Steven’s conclusion to choose Greenworks over Ego mowers. I use a Greenworks myself, and I love it! It’s been going strong since 2019. But, of course, as Steven stated, it all ultimately boils down to what you’re looking for and what models you’ve had the most success with.

I hope you have a wonderful day!

  2. At first, I loved my Ego lawn mower. It worked great last summer. This year, first time cutting the grass, it would not start. I called Ego, they told me to call a local authorized repair shop. I live in a major metro, but there are only 2 within 4 hours drive. One is 45 minutes away, the other 2 hours.

Anyway, I brought the lawn mower to the service shop 45 minutes away. That was 8 weeks ago. I still do not have my lawn mower. The repair shop cannot get the part needed from Ego. Each week, I call Ego and get the same lie, “Your issue is being escalated, we’ll call you back soon with resolution”. Each week, I do not receive a call back.

The customer “service” reps lie to get you off the phone, but no one does anything to fix the problem. Rather than telling the truth, which is probably the part is not available and will not be for several months, they lie. It is very frustrating.

Anyway, there is a serious design flaw with the lawn mower as the line from the handle to the mower gets pinched. They simply do not have the support system in place to handle the massive number of issues caused by this design flaw.

Buy this lawn mower if you are good with paying $600 for a one year lawn mower rental. Ego is a sad joke. Save yourself the easily predictable frustration and buy a lawn mower from a different company.

    1. @Anthony, the experience you’ve had with ego sounds very frustrating, and if I went through the same things as you, I’d be pretty upset as well.

However, I’ve had my gen1 push ego mower for close to 7 years, and aside from a little decrease in battery life and replacing the blades every couple of seasons, this thing works as well as the day I got it.

I also purchased a self-propelled model 3 years ago for my father, and he hasn’t had any complaints for his either.

Overall, I’d say that the overall user satisfaction and reliability for ego mowers and other gear is very high, but I’m sure there are exceptions out there like yours, Anthony. Sorry you had such a bad experience, but that hasn’t been the case for me.

    2. Hey Anthony!

Thanks for your honest review of the EGO line of lawn mowers!

We love authentic customer reviews from fellow homesteaders! And we value your feedback.

We are huge fans of EGO lawn equipment.

But – we realize how bad things have gotten across many industries and vendors – especially concerning supply lines and product availability.

(2021 and 2022 have been insane. Manufacturers have a tough time sourcing parts in many industries. We hope things improve!)

So – we understand your frustration.

      Big time!

In any event – we’re sorry to hear about your bad experience.

We hope this gets resolved soon!

Please let us know if you hear back from your local EGO repair shop soon? We’re curious to see if you ever get your lawn mower part?

Also – if you have any more questions about lawn mowers or lawn care parts? Let us know.

We’re happy to assist in any way we can – even though we’re a humble (and tiny!) team.

(We go out of our way to help readers and research any questions or concerns. So – put us to the test! We always try our best.)

      🙂

Thanks again for reading – and your feedback!

      Have an excellent day!
