What to Look for in the Best Small Gas Grill

So, you’ve decided to buy one… What to look for in the best small gas grill?

In this section, we’re going to look at some of the most important things that I think you should consider before you pick your best small gas grill. Why do I say that? Because they’re also the things that I looked at before I bought my Weber Q 1200 (Spoilers!).

The Best Gas Grill for the Money

Last week, it was time to change the car, as my previous lease had come to an end. I chose an Audi A1, one of those sporty models from the upper end of the range that makes your stomach flip when you accelerate.

Sure, I’d have liked the Audi Spyder R8, but that wasn’t exactly in my price range; it wasn’t suitable for where I’m at in life right now, my budget, and my space at home.

So, what did I do? I bought a cheaper, smaller, less powerful model, but one of the best cheaper models. Why is this important? You get what you pay for. I’m not a huge fan of cliches, but this is very much the case for small gas grills.

Let’s be honest here, you know that you’re not going to get the biggest, baddest grill if you’re tight on space, but it doesn’t mean that you can’t get a high-quality, well-reviewed grill.

Many of the most domineering gas grills come in at around the $300 – $600 range, but some can and do vary up to $1,000 or more.

The good news here is that you’re probably going to spend quite a bit less than that if you’re limited on the size of the grill you can buy. Or, perhaps you’re just more of a small gas grill fan. Either way, you’re probably looking at closer to the $100 – $300 mark. Don’t forget, you’re going to need to save a few dollars for the propane.

What’s the Grill Made From?

Let’s look at the type of material used in the grill’s construction. While most of the best small gas grills tend to use the same materials, there is some variation.

For your burners, you’re almost always going to be looking at cast iron; it’s a strong, durable material.

The frame and body are usually crafted out of sheet metal, cast iron, aluminum, or stainless steel. Ideally, you want stainless steel, which is one of the most resilient materials.

Just watch out for that thin sheet metal that seems to be a popular choice in lower-cost small gas grills; one wrong bump and it’ll dent and scratch like an overripe peach..

The Right BTUs

A grill’s BTU rating, or British Thermal Unit rating, is the measure of how much heat is required to raise the temperature of one pound of water by one degree (Fahrenheit). While the Weber Q 1200 is a small grill, you’ve still got 189 square inches of grilling space, which is more than enough for a family or small gathering.

There are two convenient hand holds for portability, which fold out into trays for your drinks, condiments, or hot dog buns. These trays also feed into the overall design, which is very ergonomic and easy on the eyes – especially if you opt for the blue edition!

Weber has developed a sort of reputation for producing the highest-quality home grills, with this tiny monster being no exception to that rule.

This best small gas grill has a single burner, capable of spitting out 8,500 BTUs, and an enameled porcelain cooking grate. Firing it up is easy too; the Weber Q 1200 grill uses an electronic ignition system to start the burner. Just be aware that you do pay extra for the Weber brand name.

One of the main drawbacks I could find – and there were very few! – for this small grill was that it struggles with larger propane canisters. One buyer said they struggled to connect a large canister, while another flat out said that the grill wouldn’t work with anything beyond a slim propane tank.

Be sure to check the connector before you go shelling out for a tank that might not fit.

One final note here, which is that this best small gas grill actually came fourth on my list after following my methodology. But the kicker here is that the Weber Q 1200 has earned an average rating on Amazon of 4.8 from 1,500 reviews.

With reviews like that, and after getting my own hands on this grill, it wasn’t hard to bump it up the list to the number 1 position, and crown it our best small gas grill for 2020.

Here’s a video showing you how to cook the perfect steaks on your Weber Q. Some good, ridgy-didge Aussie accent happening too! He’s cooking on the Weber Q 3200 but no matter, the method is the same for all Weber’s Q Grills. Here’s the full range of Weber Q Small Gas Grills.

Pros of the Weber Q 1200

  • Extremely well reviewed by consumers;
  • Features fold-out trays that can be used for prep or storage;
  • Comes fully assembled straight out of the box.

Cons of the Weber Q 1200

  • You pay for the Weber reputation;
  • Has some trouble with fatter propane canisters;
  • Temperature can easily be affected by wind.

I hope you don’t feel cheated here, because you could argue that this grill isn’t that small. It’s still smaller than some of the biggest, most expensive models that could scorch a hole in your lawn, but it’s no Weber Q 1200.

You’re going to need a modest footprint in your yard or on the patio to make space for the Weber Spirit E-210, but I simply had to include it in the best small gas grills for 2020 after seeing the overwhelmingly positive feedback on both authority websites and in customer reviews.

Actually, it’s marketed as a “smaller” grill; it’ll fit on even a balcony. And even if you leave it out there with a suitable cover all year, you’ll be happy knowing that the porcelain-enameled lid is far less likely to suffer damage at the hands of mother nature.

There’s even a temperature gauge mounted into the front of the lid; no more checking if the grill is hot enough, only to release half of the heat.

One of my favorite little features here was the tool hooks. How many times have you stuck all your tongs, kebab skewers, or spatulas on a fold-out tray, only to have them dive for the ground and need washing?

Let’s cover the main two drawbacks real quick.

Firstly, the inside of the grill is tricky to reach for cleaning. Secondly, the ignition only lights one burner, relying on the flames spreading across the rest. There’s nothing wrong with the design, but on a windy day, it could take longer to get going.

Pros of the Weber Spirit E-210

  • Powerful, yet still small enough for a balcony;
  • The porcelain-enameled lid is highly resistant to rust;
  • Six tool hooks save space on your side trays for prep, condiments, or more food!
  • A temperature gauge tells you if you’re good to go, without the need to open the grill and reduce the heat.

Cons of the Weber Spirit E-210

  • Ignition system only lights one burner;
  • Some color variants hold up better over time;
  • Getting inside for cleaning tasks can be a little fiddly.

Thinking back, I bought my first grill in 2018 after moving into a new place. My partner was working, but I promised her an amazing barbeque upon her return.

Unfortunately, what I hadn’t accounted for was the behemoth task of constructing the grill. It wasn’t particularly expensive, but it did come with instructions on how to assemble the 400,000 components. But seriously, the Char-Broil Classic 280 will take a while longer to put together than your typical small small grill.

I say this because this is the second grill on the list that you could argue isn’t that small. However, it is smaller than the Weber Spirit E-210, and you should easily fit this onto a balcony, patio, or other small space.

What I really like about this model are two things mainly; firstly, the cooking grates are coated in porcelain. I cannot tell you enough how much easier these are to clean than metal. Secondly, there’s a fold-away rack that can be elevated above the cooking area for warming food.

There is a consequence to these lovely additions, which manifests in a lack of tool hooks – no biggie.

But the main drawback here is that when I was scouring customer reviews, I saw several that mentioned poor temperature control.

Perhaps ‘poor’ is too harsh a word otherwise the grill wouldn’t have made our list, but you may well accidentally kill the flames when adjusting at lower levels. Thankfully, that’s not exactly a problem that’s hard to rectify.

Pros of the Char-Broil Classic 280 Small Grill

  • Even the cooking grates are porcelain-coated!
  • Three burners give powerful and well-distributed heat;
  • A fold-out rack separates from the cooking area for warming.

Cons of the Char-Broil Classic 280 Small Grill

  • Lacks any tool hooks;
  • Takes a while to put together;
  • Temperature control seems like a sticking point for some customers.

If you’re looking for a portable gas grill, then this is it.

It’s not just small, and it’s not just lightweight; you’ve also got fold-out legs that tuck away for portability, plus a briefcase-style handle.

Finally, the whole thing comes in at just 18.5 x 16 x 11.5 inches. If I had to find a niggle with the design, it’s that the legs don’t lock into place when folded out, but really it feels like nitpicking to even mention that.

If you hate cleaning grills, then you’ll like the Cuisinart Petit Gourmet Grill.

When your oven gets dirty at home, what do you do? Simply slide out the cooking racks and spray the whole thing down with a powerful cleaner. Well, it’s the same concept here; the rack slides away easily so that you can get to all those stains and burnt-on spots.

Aside from the lack of a locking mechanism on the legs, my other main concerns were around the size of the cooking area and the BTU rating.

At 5,500 BTU, it’s one of the weaker grills – but still highly competent at cooking anything you throw at it.

In terms of the cooking area, again, I feel unfair in mentioning this because it has been designed to be a smaller grill, but it’s fairly small. However, you can still fit around 6 burger patties, or 6 chicken breasts, or a whole heap or hot dogs.

Pros of the Cuisinart Petit Gourmet Grill

  • Super lightweight – only 17 lbs;
  • Portable – can be taken camping or to the beach;
  • Cleaning this little grill is super easy – the cooking grate slides away like conventional ovens.

Cons of the Cuisinart Petit Gourmet Grill

  • The fold-out legs do not lock into place;
  • 5,500 BTU burner is one of the weaker grills on this list;
  • Cooking area could be larger, but it’s still plenty roomy.

This best small gas grill is a real talking piece. Actually, it’s not my first time seeing one; my friend, who is also super into outdoorsy type pursuits, has had one of these for a couple of summers now. It’s unfortunate, too; the company is committed to upgrading the grill, as evidenced by the fact they recently gave it a face-lift for 2020.

Among the changes in the Fuego Element is new enamel coating on the lid to protect against rust. The old model – and my friend’s! – suffered from rust around the lid’s surface. What’s more, they’ve added an awesome new feature that makes cleaning incredibly easy – the ‘drop through residue removal system’

But onto the pièce de résistance!

I saw a lot of customers talking about the issue they had moving their grill when the propane tank was still connected. Not with this model; it simply tucks away inside the cabinet that’s built into the grill – I love it!

Honestly, the drawbacks don’t really merit much further discussion as they’re not huge, but you can check them out below.

Pros of the Fuego Element Grill

  • Eye-catching design that’s really unique;
  • Propane tank sits conveniently tucked away;
  • ‘Drop through residue removal system’ makes cleaning simple.

Cons of the Fuego Element Grill

  • Susceptible to bumps and scrapes;
  • Pretty expensive – more so than any of those above;
  • Lacks any tool hooks or additional storage space like trays.

Finding the Best Small Gas Grill

I developed my own way of picking out the best outdoor products after getting frustrated with websites that appeared to plug sub-par products purely for clicks and sales (insert obligatory ‘that’s not how we do things around here’ statement).

And that’s the truth, because I’m going to share with you the technique I’ve developed for finding the best products on the market, and that includes the best small gas grills

I start out by running a quick search on Google for the ‘best small gas grills’, then run through the first few pages and open every ranking article that I can find.

Next, I use a quick Python (development language) script that I’ve put together to pull all the data from the website – that’s the number of products reviewed, the order in which they ranked, and the product name.

My script tosses all of this data into Microsoft Excel, tallies the number of times a product is mentioned across all websites, and tallies the overall score that product gained from all sources. The last step is to order the products by the highest number of mentions (descending) and the overall score from all rankings combined (ascending.).

Phew! I’m not sure if you followed that, but don’t worry, all that matters is that this is the most comprehensive method for finding the best small gas grills (and other products) you’ll come across.  I also do a sense-check on websites like Amazon and manufacturer’s websites, and only included grills that have also been highly praised by customers.

The Winner – Best Small Gas Grill for 2020

I’ve slightly given away the game here, so you probably already know that my all-time winner from these 5 best small gas grills is the Weber Q 1200 Liquid Propane Grill.

I always place a lot of importance on tried-and-tested customer feedback, and the reviews speak for themselves. I recommend going for the blue option – it’s a stunning color. It also comes in titanium, black, green, orange, and red.
