In the summer heat, issues pop up that need solving. I’m talking about bug issues! And in particular, mosquitoes. When you sit out on your lawn chair in the backyard and feel something bite you, it’s most likely a mosquito. There is a terrible after itch! And it’s almost impossible to avoid scratching the bites even a little.

One reason why mosquitoes stick around your backyard is if you have a pond or fountain nearby. Mosquitoes are attracted to water, and as humidity rises in the summer, they love to hang around any bodies of water that they feel they can inhabit.

Now that we know what mosquitoes love – let’s find out what they despise.

Shall we?

What Keeps Mosquitoes Away?

We’ve been reading research from The London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine and the Ifakara Health Institute. The most potent natural repellents include lemon eucalyptus extract, citronella, neem, and essential oils like lavender oil, peppermint oil, lemongrass oil, and pine oil

Alternatively, the University of Wisconsin suggests using vanilla extract and catnip oil. The vanilla extract could be a possible mosquito repellent, though not by itself. Instead – adding vanilla to other repellents may increase their potency and effectiveness against mosquitoes.

Catnip oil was reportedly able to repel mosquitoes at ten times greater than DEET, a repellent product. However, subsequent studies show conflicting results. Your results may vary!

Here’s where to buy these natural insect repellents:

Citronella candles keep mosquitoes away for a time. But they’re not perfect. The main problems with citronella are that the vapors from the citronella candle don’t reach far – and they don’t last. Oil from citronella candles may keep mosquitoes away from small areas like your front porch or patio. But only temporarily!

Mosquito-Repelling Candle FAQs and Buyer’s Guide

Insecticides containing DEET (diethyltoluamide) are usually the most effective at combating mosquitoes. Some homesteaders prefer natural mosquito repellents, though. Citronella oil is one of the most popular natural mosquito-repelling alternatives.

Want to figure out why mosquitoes bug you so much?

Repelling mosquitoes outside is like driving away any unwanted pests from your home. If you know the blueprint of a mosquito game plan? (And I don’t mean they wear little football helmets or anything!), Then you can better prepare for them.

Why Do Mosquitoes Attack People?

The attraction process mosquitoes go through begins long before they land on you. Mosquitoes can smell your presence from as far out as 50 meters. If you emit large amounts of carbon dioxide, then definitely be aware of where mosquitoes are! Carbon dioxide is attractive to mosquitoes, and if you exhale more of it via physical activities (like playing outdoor sports), you will be a prime target for Team Mosquitoes!

(There’s another football reference! These little buggers fight with the tenacity of Tom Brady and Gronk rolled into one. Watch out – and stay sharp!)

Where Do Mosquitoes Go in the Winter?

Mosquitoes don’t just go away when the winter season begins. Some mosquito adults even hibernate over winter! (Little devils!) Depending on the species, mosquitoes overwinter in the egg stage in the winter. Once the temperatures warm, mosquito eggs hatch. They take the place of their parents. The prime destination of mosquitoes laying their eggs is any water-holding item that contains as little as one-half inch of water. Mosquito breeding conditions also depend on your area’s climate.

What Do Mosquitoes Like to Eat?

In their adult stage, all mosquitoes like to feed on the nectar of plants to get sugar. The sugar gives mosquitoes enough nourishment to do what they do best, annoy their targets! Female mosquitoes particularly need sugar to produce eggs. Proteins are required to create mosquito eggs, which come from the blood of animals.

What Makes Mosquito Repellent Candles Effective?

Some of the natural compounds in candles repel mosquitoes. Citronella oil is our favorite example. We’ve found that the repelling nature of candles is dependent on a combination of things – including environmental factors.

Water exposure, sweat, the level of activity, size of the site, the air temperature, wind conditions, and the amount of the candle product’s active ingredient all make up this combination.

Which Essential Oil Repels Mosquitoes?

Many different essential oils can help to create mosquito repellent candles. Most often, you see citronella candles. Citronella oil has consistently proven to be a viable natural mosquito repellent. However, that doesn’t mean you should only buy citronella candles. Feel free to mix up the types of scents for your candles and see which one works the best! Your results may vary.

What is DEET?

The repellent product mentioned at the beginning of this article may have raised some eyebrows. DEET is a chemical compound used to repel biting insects, including mosquitoes. It has been commonly used for over 50 years to fight off mosquitoes. It is a product by the U.S. Department of Agriculture and for American military personnel. DEET is effective in repelling mosquitoes for up to 12 hours.

However, what about safety? How safe is DEET? We believe DEET is generally safe for most people when used sparingly. But – it may have undesirable side effects like drowsiness, confusion, spasms, or seizures – especially if exposed to broken skin.

That’s one reason why I recommend using natural mosquito repellent candles. DEET has a negative reputation (among some) for being a potent chemical with possible (undesirable) side effects. DEET works at repelling mosquitoes and ticks. No doubt! But – some folks don’t like using it – and we understand their concern.

Conclusion

We find that adding citronella candles to your home is only one part of mosquito management. We also recommend emptying stagnant bodies of water if possible – like buckets, barrels, empty pots, wheelbarrows, and even tin cans. These areas are harborage areas for mosquitoes – and their eggs!

While you could spend some money on various repellent products, few of them add as much ambiance and relaxation as a wonderfully-scented mosquito repellent candle.

Whether it is the long-lasting burns, the pleasant smells, or the convenience of moving them anywhere around your house, mosquito repellent candles are great investments worth making.

Besides, we can all take a break from having annoying bugs flying around us!

What about you?

Have you had luck with citronella or lemongrass candles to banish mosquitoes from your life?

Or – do you have any other tips to help rid us of these pesky buzzers?

If so – we would love to hear your thoughts.

Thanks again for reading.

Have a great day!
