6 Best Sewing Books for Beginners – Our Top Pick

There are many different types of sewing machines but don’t let it overwhelm you – the right sewing books will have you sewing much sooner than you might think!

Sewing is a great hobby to have, and it is something that anyone can learn how to do. All of the best sewers were beginners at one point! So, don’t feel too intimidated if you’re new to sewing and stitching!

Yes, there are dozens of different sewing machines, types of fabric, and other things.

However, a good sewing book for beginners should tell you everything you need to know to get started. Preferably it will teach in such a simple way that a kid could understand it, which is why my favorite is A Kid’s Guide to Sewing.

A Kid’s Guide to Sewing makes sewing easy! That’s the main thing I’ve looked for in a sewing book for beginners! It’s my top recommendation.

Here’s why.

I wanted a sewing book that wasn’t boring – and one with clear instructions.

The sewing book feels like having someone walk you through your first sewing project. And, for those that don’t know someone familiar with sewing machines, a book that explains introductory sewing topics to you is an absolute necessity.

That’s why a Kid’s Guide to Sewing is my favorite! But, there are other sewing books that I recommend, too.

Here are what I consider some of the best sewing books for beginners that I could find. Any one of these sewing books might be just what you need to get started – without getting bored to death!

  1. A Kid's Guide to Sewing: Learn to Sew with Sophie & Her Friends • 16 Fun Projects You'll Love to Make & Use
  2. A Kid's Guide to Sewing: Learn to Sew with Sophie & Her Friends • 16 Fun Projects You'll Love to Make & Use

This sewing book for beginners is perfect! The title says simple enough for kids to understand - and it is.

Though it doesn’t get into some of the more complicated aspects of sewing, it does tell a beginner everything they need to know. The book also makes sewing easy - so it gets major bonus points.

Even though it is for kids, it is perfect for a beginner of any age. This sewing book goes over your sewing machine itself, the elementary sewing tools you need, and how to choose fabrics.

Another thing I love about a Kid's Guide to Sewing is the bright, colorful, detailed illustrations. The book's easy and fun to read.

Having vivid and easy-to-understand sewing photos for every step makes learning the sewing process simple for beginners.

It also has sixteen projects from simple to slightly more complicated and gives easy tips to help you along.

  3. Singer: The Complete Photo Guide to Sewing, 3rd Edition
  4. Singer: The Complete Photo Guide to Sewing, 3rd Edition

This sewing book features hundreds of beautiful sewing diagrams and photos so you can understand various sewing techniques.

The photos show you how to make both fashion and décor projects. It even shows how to work with a variety of fabrics as it gives you some hands-on projects.

My favorite part is the section on sergers, though it doesn’t go in-depth on how to pick your machine. But, I love sergers and I give the author extra credit for talking about them!

My only gripe with it was some of the information organization! Here's what I mean.

The information seems slightly out of order at times. Some topics mentioned earlier in the book don't get addressed until later pages.

  5. Sewing For Dummies
  6. Sewing For Dummies

This sewing book covers so much more than just sewing.

It goes over hand sewing, machine sewing, and serger sewing, which I loved. If you are not interested in getting a serger, though, this might seem like wasted space.

You'll learn sewing basics like sewing patterns, machine stitching, and correcting common sewing mistakes.

You'll also tackle more advanced sewing topics like hemming, fashion sewing, trims, piping, mixing fabrics, and more.

In addition, it has budgeting tips to help you cut costs when sewing.

The step-by-step illustrations could be a little clearer sometimes, but all of the information is up to date and make sewing easy to learn.

Overall, it has a ton of good sewing instructions, and it's a great complement to any other sewing book.

  7. Sewing 101, Revised and Updated: Master Basic Skills and Techniques Easily through Step-by-Step Instruction
  8. Sewing 101, Revised and Updated: Master Basic Skills and Techniques Easily through Step-by-Step Instruction

The sewing book is for absolute novices who know nothing about sewing. It has whole chapters on your sewing machine, how to shop for fabric and other things you need to know.

It has lots of pictures, step-by-step instructions, and a detailed glossary. My favorite part was the sewing projects! I love the idea of making items like pillows or a T-shirt while you learn the different techniques.

All of the sewing projects in the book have a DIY sewing project perfect for homesteaders. If you'd prefer to practice sewing while you learn and study, then you might love the book.

Unfortunately, the one missing thing was that this book didn’t have much information on patterns. Beginners tend to need explanations on how to read and use sewing patterns properly.

  9. How To Start Sewing: The How and Why of Sewing for Fashion Design
  10. How To Start Sewing: The How and Why of Sewing for Fashion Design

I was a bit uncertain about this sewing book when the title mentioned fashion design. Fashion design sounds too fancy!

However, there is so much more than fashion inside it that it is perfect for anyone looking to start sewing. It also serves as a handy-dandy reference book for those who struggle to keep track of all those sewing terms.

My favorite thing about it was all of the exercises throughout the book that you can do. These help you learn different techniques in a hands-on way. It also helps to know which scissors, pins, et cetera you should buy.

Probably my only complaint about this book is the photos. They're all black and white! While the sheer number and detail of pictures make up for this color - it would have been nice to have at least a few colored photographs!

(Not a deal-breaker. However, I figured the lack of color is worth noting.)

  11. First Time Sewing: The Absolute Beginner's Guide
  12. First Time Sewing: The Absolute Beginner's Guide

This beginner’s guide for first-time sewers teaches a few hand stitches that new sewers would benefit from learning.

New sewers also learn how to sew with a machine. First Time Sewing also has fun sewing projects ranging from a rectangular tablecloth to elastic waist skirts and pants - to zippers, aprons, and jackets.

It doesn’t tell you how to set up your machine, so this book is best if you already have a sewing machine ready that you're comfortable using.

Though that information would have been a worthy addition - this beginner sewing book is more focused on telling you how to sew instead of getting set up with your sewing machine and sewing materials first.
