Best Gardening Apron With Pockets for Harvesting and Tools 2023

I realised today that I really need a gardening apron. I never wanted an apron for gardening, thinking it was just a little too “grandma” or I didn’t want to seem like I couldn’t handle getting dirty or something like that. But you know what, it’s actually not great getting mud on your clothes when you’ve still got to take the kids to school. Nor is it cool to get bitten by bugs because they were hiding in mulch that you were holding against your body.

Or, what happened the other day, I got an awesome new Mango picker, a proper, US made, Barnel ultra reach cut & hold pruner, a big long fruit harvesting pole that can reach up really high. Not a half-baked basket type picking pole, but a proper cut & hold picker. You’ll find out why a cut & hold picker is essential for harvesting mangoes in a minute!

My husband spent some time as a mango picker in his younger days (feels like yesterday to him, no doubt) and he’s forever telling me that I’ve got to be careful with mangoes, their sap is a skin irritant and some people would be covered from head to toe by a horrible rash. I always seem to need to find things out for myself, so I cut my mangoes and stacked them against my body to transport them to the house.

The next day…. Covered in a truly awful rash, my chest and arms were absolutely covered in a burning, irritating rash and my one arm was the size of my thigh. Enough I thought, I need a gardening apron, dang, the husband was right!

Here are the best gardening aprons I found, and we’ll discuss each gardening apron‘s features. I’ll tell you which one is the best too, the one I bought.

Best Gardening Apron

1. Roo Garden Apron

This is my favorite gardening apron. I can’t help but love the colors, peony pink, orchid purple, leaf green… Such a fresh change from the other aprons which are mostly green, green and green. The Roo has excellent reviews too, it is a really great design and the one best suited to harvesting. The other aprons have great pockets too, but the Roo has an easy-access pouch especially designed for harvesting fruit, and I can really see myself using this for collecting the chicken‘s eggs too.

The harvesting pouch has a release at the bottom too, so you don’t need to take your harvested fruit or veg out one by one, you just hold the apron over the sink, undo the release and your harvest will slide into the sink for washing or prepping.

In addition to the harvesting pouch, it has other pockets too for tools, phones, whatever you need. The gardening apron is made of heavy duty canvas cotton and it is lined with water-resistant nylon. Because it’s lined with nylon and not coating in a waterproofing wax, you can easily wash this in the washing machine. Buy 2 for when one’s in the wash!

It’s a one-size-fits-all with adjustable cotton straps and it comes with a no-questions-asked, 100% satisfaction guarantee. You can buy this, try this, and if you don’t like it, no harm done just send it back!

Roo makes a Joey version of this apron too if you prefer an apron that only wraps around the waist.

Pros

  • This gardening apron is especially designed for harvesting fruit and veg
  • Lightweight, soft, durable fabric.
  • Lined with water-resistant nylon which makes it water repellent but allows you to machine wash.
  • A range of awesome colors.
  • No questions-asked, 100% satisfaction guarantee.

Cons

  • Besides the harvesting pocket, there are only 2 other pockets, so your choice of pockets is limited compared to the next couple of aprons below.
  • The harvesting pocket is best suited to small harvests as the hooks that hold the release may collapse under too much weight. Not good when it contains a few dozen eggs!
  • The smaller pockets for tools aren’t very deep so they may fall out.

2. Tour Artist Canvas Gardening Apron

Tour’s gardening apron is handcrafted from waxed canvas, which is one of the best fabric for hardwearing, long-lasting aprons. The pockets are reinforced so your tools are safely secured and gardening knives or secateurs don’t easily punch a hole through.

The apron skirt is 25.59″ and the hem is 50″ which allows you to wrap the apron right around your body for full protection. It has an extra long waist tie to fit every person and if they are too long you can simply wrap them around the back and back to the front.

This apron has a total of 10 pockets, 6 large ones and 4 small ones. It has small pockets up the top to securely hold scissors and pens, and larger pockets at waist level for everything from phones to mangoes.

Being made of waxed canvas, there are pros and cons. Waxed canvas is incredibly durable and not much penetrates it, especially not water. However, you cannot wash it in the washing machine as you’ll lose your coating. It will need to be handwashed with very mild soap to preserve the coating. This doesn’t apply if you don’t mind losing the coating of course, it doesn’t hurt the material itself to throw it in the washing machine, just the coating itself.

The coating also wears off after time. You can use Otter Wax to reapply the coating. You rub it on by hand and then heat it with a heat gun or hair dryer. Leave it for 24 hours and you’re good to go again!

Pros

  • Hardwearing 16oz waxed canvas
  • Extra long waist strap
  • 10 pockets of varying sizes
  • Green color is suitable for men and women
  • Lightweight at 15.8oz

Cons

  • The waxed canvas material can be quite stiff. Being waxed makes it waterproof and gives you great protection from water and mud etc. but it does make the material a bit hard. If you do not want it stiff, you can wash it with castile soap in warm water and it will soften. However, you will lose the waterproofness.
  • To preserve the wax, you need to hand wash this gardening apron. It will need to be gently handwashed with as little soap as possible. It can be machine washed but again, you’ll lose the coating.

This apron is the most expensive one in my best gardening apron list today but it’s my second-favorite and I think its price is worth it. It is made of 100% cotton twill, a hardwearing but soft and lightweight material. It is not waterproof but it is water repellent so it’ll give you more protection than a standard cooking apron.

This apron also features lots of pockets so you can keep your hands free. I particularly like the phone pocket at the top, which has a special closure so it doesn’t fall out. These days we have our phone with us all the time so a good phone pocket is a must!

Unlike the waxed canvas garden apron above, this apron can be machine washed and you can throw it in the dryer too. So, you sacrifice some waterproofness but gain ease of washing. Besides the features of this apron, I also appreciate Parva’s 100% satisfaction guarantee. They are a small, US based, family business and they stand by their products which I love.

The apron is a one-size-fits-most, so it’s important to check that it fits you before purchasing. It was designed to fit women, so it may not be unisex like the one above.

Pros

  • Machine washable and can go in the dryer.
  • Soft, lightweight and durable fabric.
  • Special phone pocket with velcro closure
  • Good, deep pockets.

Cons

  • Not 100% waterproof.
  • Designed for women in a one-size-fits-most. May not fit everyone.
  • This apron does not have reinforced pockets so sharp tools may poke through.
  • The straps do not tie around the front, something a lot of people like. You can only tie them at the back.

My Best Gardening Apron

My best gardening apron is the Roo, clear and simple. I like the fact that it has many colors, the big harvesting pocket, the fact that it has a 100% satisfaction guarantee so you can send it back if you don’t like it, no questions asked. I love the material, it’s perfect for the garden, not too soft, not too hard so you feel like a builder or handyman. This apron allows you to feel a bit fashionable if though you’re wearing an apron.

I also like Tour’s apron but decided against it in the end, mainly because it doesn’t have 1 big pocket for chicken eggs and vegetables. I do like the fact that it is reinforced so your tools don’t poke holes and that it is totally waterproof.
