10 Best Electric Chainsaws of 2020 Review (Battery Models)

Chainsaw

Time to upgrade your old electric chainsaw or change from a gas chainsaw to a battery-powered one? We’ve got your 10 best electric chainsaws listed right here! I’ve split them up into sizes; the best large electric chainsaw, medium-sized, and small saws.

Best Medium Electric Chainsaw

Best Small Electric Chainsaw

 Best Electric Chainsaws – Small (10 & 12″ Bar)

1. Black & Decker LCS 1240 Cordless 40V 12″ Electric Chainsaw Review

The Black & Decker LCS 1240 cordless chainsaw is a little beast of a chainsaw with a 40V 2.0Ah MAX lithium-ion battery. Lithium-ion batteries have a long runtime and overall life – you should get about 60 4×4 lumber cuts on a single charge.

This chainsaw is our winner in the small category because of value. It’s a lot cheaper than the Makita. If I had unlimited money, I’d buy the Makita. It’s almost 3x times the price of the Black & Decker though, which has 1000s of raving reviews as well, so on a value-for-money basis, this is my pick.

It comes with a 12″ bar and chain, with an automatic oiling system and tool-less chain tensioning to take the hassle out of tensioning your chain. It’s lightweight at only 10.4 pounds and unlike some of our other best electric chainsaws today, the battery is included.

This electric chainsaw is best for pruning branches or cutting fallen tree limbs.

Features

  • 40V 2.0Ah MAX lithium-ion battery
  • 12″ Oregon low-kickback bar and chain
  • Automatic oiling system
  • Tool-less chain tensioning
  • 10.4 pounds
  • Charges an empty battery in 4-5 hours.

2. Makita XCU02PT 18V X2 (36V) 5aH 12″ Cordless Chainsaw Review

Makita’s XCU02PT electric chainsaw is a bit different. It is powered by 2 18V LXT batteries, totaling 36V, so you get the performance and run time of 36V, but you’re still on the 18V platform so you can use the same batteries as your other Makita battery tools. Quite innovative!

What I really like about this chainsaw is that it is a ready-to-use kit. It comes with 2 fast-charging 18V LXT batteries and a dual-port charger so you can charge both batteries at the same time. Makita’s 18V lithium-ion batteries charge very quickly so you have minimal downtime.

It has a 12″ bar, tool-less chain adjustment, and weighs 12.3 pounds. A bit heavier than our Black & Decker chainsaw above, but still very manageable.

Makita’s XPT (Extreme Protection Technology) means this electric chainsaw has a series of protective seals inside to channel water, dust, and debris away from your chainsaw’s important internal components.

The result? Increased durability, up to 3x faster charging, up to 50% more run time, up to 50% longer motor life, and more efficient power management.

Features

  • 2x 18V LXT 5.0Ah lithium-ion batteries and an 18V dual port charger
  • 1650 FPM for increased cutting speed
  • Makita XPT technology
  • 89dB is much quieter than a gas chainsaw
  • 12.3 pounds
  • 12″ bar with tool-less chain adjustment

3. Greenworks 20292 Battery-Powered Chainsaw Review

You can get the Greenworks 20292 battery chainsaw by itself for around $65, but I’ve included the kit today. If you’ve already got Greenworks batteries from other tools, here’s the chainsaw on its own. And here’s the chainsaw with battery and charger.

Remember how we said the Black & Decker can get about 60 4×4 lumber cuts on a single charge? Well, our Greenworks chainsaw should get you up to 75 cuts!

This chainsaw only weighs 6 pounds. That’s amazingly light-weight compared to our Makita saw above, which weighs around 12 pounds. Even their 14″ model only weighs just over 7 pounds, lightweight is obviously Greenworks’ specialty.

It runs on a G-MAX 40V lithium-ion battery with 12″ steel chain and bar. As with all our best electric chainsaws today, it offers tool-less chain tensioning and automatic oiling.

One thing to watch here is that the batteries for this chainsaw are not cross-compatible with the standard 40V Greenworks lithium-ion batteries. This chainsaw is only compatible with the G-MAX 2.0Ah battery and the G-MAX 4.0Ah battery.

Features

  • Ultra-lightweight at 6 pounds
  • 40V G-MAX lithium-ion battery
  • Tool-less chain tensioning
  • Automatic oiling
  • 3/8″ chain pitch for minimal kickback

4. Worx WG322 20V Electric Chainsaw Review

The Worx WG322 chainsaw weighs just over 6 pounds. That puts it in the lightweight category for small electric chainsaw today. It’s very similar to Greenworks‘ 6 pounds, and way lighter than Makita’s 12 pounds.

It offers an automatic tool-free tensioning system and automatic chain lubrication. The 20V battery can be used to power all your 20V and 40V tools, which makes the WORX PowerShare platform the only one of its kind. The same battery for 20V or 40V tools, that’s handy!

The best thing about this electric chainsaw is the price, it’s a great little saw if you’re on a budget.

Features

  • Automatic, tool-free chain tensioning
  • Automatic oiling system
  • 6.2 pounds
  • Same battery for 20V and 40V tools

Best Electric Chainsaws – Medium (14″ Bar)

1. EGO Power+ CS1400 14″ 56V Cordless Chainsaw Review

This is one of my favorite battery powered chainsaws today, bar the Milwaukee Fuel, you can’t beat that. The 14″ is the perfect size for most jobs around the yard and this is a beast. It has a brushless motor with 6300 RPM, so you can cut through hardwood, softwood, branches, and more. The brushless motor has a long life and low vibrations.

One warning: the battery and charger are not included with this chainsaw. You’ll have to get them separately.

It uses a patented 56V ARC lithium-ion battery which offers incredible power. With its 16″ brother, these are our most powerful electric chainsaws in this review. The 56V ARC lithium battery works with all EGO POWER+ tools. EGO recommends the 2.5Ah ARC lithium battery.

Combine all this with a lightweight construction (8.3 pounds) and awesome warranty and we’ve got a real winner here.

Features

  • Patented 56V high-power ARC lithium-ion batteries (not included)
  • Efficient brushless motor with 6300 RPM
  • All EGO outdoor power equipment comes with a 5-year limited and 3-year limited on EGO POWER+ System battery packs and chargers
  • 14″ Oregon bar and chain
  • Weather-resistant construction
  • Kickback brake

2. Makita XCU03PT1 18V X2 (36V) 14″ Brushless Cordless Chain Saw Review

Makita once again makes to (nearly) the top of the list, this time for best medium-sized electric chainsaw. This kit comes with 4 batteries, which, from experience, is a great thing. Electric chainsaw do tend to chew up the juice and having a spare set of batteries is a great thing.

A not-so-great thing is the weight, you’ll be lugging 21.8 pounds around the yard. Compared to the little 6-pound saws above, that’s a fair bit. However, for that extra weight, you get power. Two 18V LXT lithium-iron batteries give you 36V of power. Not quite EGO’s 56V but decent nonetheless.

This chainsaw features a Makita-built outer rotor BL™ brushless motor direct-drive system. That gives you power equivalent to a 32cc gas chainsaw. Makita developed this saw with landscapers and contractors in mind, so you’re buying a commercial-type electric chainsaw.

The Makita XCU03PT1 is a kit that includes the chainsaw, 4 fast-charging 18V LXT lithium-ion 5.0Ah batteries, and a dual-port Rapid Optimum Charger.

Features

  • Makita-built outer rotor BL™ brushless motor direct-drive system
  • 14″ bar
  • 21.8 pounds
  • 940 FPM chain speed
  • Tool-less chain adjustment and 3/8″ pitch chain
  • Easily fill the oil with large oil port and view window so you can see where you’re up to

3. Husqvarna 14″ 120i Cordless Battery Powered Chainsaw Review

I’m a huge Husqvarna fan. We come from Australian hardwood country (which has to be some of the hardest wood on earth) and Husqvarna chainsaws always performed incredibly well. You can read my Husqvarna Rancher vs Stihl 291 chainsaw review on that one.

The Husqvarna 120i was built for the homeowner. It’s best for pruning branches and felling small trees. It’s got good power with the 40V battery, which is compatible with Husqvarna’s other 40V cordless tools.

To save power, you can choose between maximum power and maximum runtime with Husqvarna’s savE mode, via the control keypad.

Features

  • 40V 4Ah battery and charger included
  • Comes with chainsaw bar cover
  • Just under 11 pounds with battery installed
  • Automatic chain oiler
  • 14″ chain with 3/8″ pitch and 0.043″ gauge
  • SavE mode

Best Electric Chainsaws – Large (16″+ Bar)

1. Milwaukee M18 FUEL 16″ 18V Cordless Chainsaw Review

Why is the Milwaukee M18 chainsaw my winner in the large electric chainsaw category, you might ask? Well, for starter, you won’t need your gas chainsaw anymore. Just read the reviews. It doesn’t have many on Amazon, but the Milwaukee website has over 600 raving reviews.

Not only that…

We personally own nearly the whole Milwaukee Fuel range and every single Fuel tool is amazing.  My husband takes the Fuel pack to work, where he uses them on giant mining equipment. His most-used and favorite Milwaukee tool is the 1/2″ impact wrench, 1200+ reviews with 4.8 out of 5 ratings!

And, if you don’t want to take our word for it, just have a look at the Milwaukee shop… Thousand of awesome reviews. You can’t go wrong with Milwaukee! I mean, this stuff is legendary.

This beast of a chainsaw cuts hardwood, softwood, branches – anything, really. It cuts faster than your gas saw and you get up to 150 cuts per charge. It features a POWERSTATE™ Brushless Motor which maintains your speed under heavy load without bogging down.

You’ve got protection from overload, overheating, and over-discharge with the REDLINK PLUS™ intelligence system. Plus, you’ll go from zero to full throttle in under 1 second!

OK, in the Milwaukee battery chainsaw we’ve got:

  • Cut hardwood, softwood, branches – without losing power or bogging down
  • 150 cuts per charge
  • Compatibility with all M18 REDLITHIUM battery packs

It features a brushless motor, tool-less chain tensioning system, and 043″ gauge chain with 3/8″ low-pro pitch. Comes with 16″ Oregon bar and chain.

Electric Chainsaws vs Gas Chainsaws

electric-chainsaw-vs-gas-chainsaw

Things have really changed recently. A few years ago, had I asked a local woodcutter what they thought about electric chainsaws, the answer would have been a lot different from what it is today. I have to admit, I was the same. How could electric possibly be as good as the raw grunt of a gas-powered powered machine?

Look at it now. Electric chainsaws have come a long, long way.

They’re not under-powered anymore. Well, the good ones aren’t anyway. We’ve got the Milwaukee Fuel, for example, providing the same power as a 40cc saw! They’re quiet, they don’t stink, they’re ridiculously easy to start. And you never run out of gas! When you’re far from the shop like we are, that’s huge.

No more pulling the starter cord a 100 times. No spark plugs. No ignition problems. All hail the new breed of electric power tools.

Are Battery Chainsaws Good?

As with anything, that totally depends on which chainsaw you buy. Some are amazing, some are less than impressive. Luckily, you’ve got the 10 best electric chainsaws above for an overview!

Some brands we covered today included the awesome Milwaukee, EGO, Makita, and Black & Decker. Greenworks is high up there, and Worx came in a respectable fourth on the small chainsaw category.

Read the reviews. Think about what you want to use it for. Spend as much as you can to get the highest quality saw you can. Go for Milwaukee, EGO, or Makita if you can. If you’re on more of a budget, check out Black & Decker and Greenworks. If you want a true budget saw, look at the Worx chainsaw.

Look at the overall range of the brand too. Milwaukee, for example, has a huge range of tools that use the same battery system. Plus, every tool they make has amazing reviews.

Can You Cut Big Trees With an Electric Chainsaw?

Yeah, you can cut pretty dang big tree with an electric chainsaw. We’ve used ours on some really decent trees.

It depends on whether you’re cutting a softwood tree or a hardwood tree too. Milwaukee actually advertises that their saw can cut hardwood and softwood, and it doesn’t bog down.  You can see more in the Milwaukee video above.

It also depends on bar length. You generally go with a tree diameter to bar length ratio of less than 2:1. So, if you have a 16″ bar, you’d hypothetically cut trees up to 32″ in diameter. That’s a pretty big tree! If you want to cut trees this big, make sure you buy a saw that matches the size in power.

That’s stretching it of course, but you could expect to comfortably cut trees up to 24″ or so. The bigger the tree, the more power you’re going to use so make sure you have a big battery and a sharp chain. A sharp chain cuts easier so you use less power.

Felling big trees is dangerous work so if you’re not comfortable or not quite sure of what you’re doing, it might be better to get a professional to come in and do the job.

Most professionals use gas chainsaws of 50cc and bigger, with bars as long as 20 or 22″. If you’re looking at cutting big trees on a regular basis, look into a Stihl or Husqvarna gas saw instead.

Electric Chainsaw Chain Sharpening

Unfortunately, you’ll still need to sharpen your chain on an electric chainsaw. We might have automatic oiling systems and chain tensioners, but this is something we still need to do manually.

How often you’ll need to sharpen depends on many things. Are you cutting hardwood, softwood, rotten wood, wood with dirt inside?

If you’re cutting fresh wood, you’ll be sharpening your chain much less than when you’re cutting old wood that’s been on the ground and is full of dirt. The same if you’re cutting firewood that’s been lying around for a while. You’ll probably sharpen your chain every half an hour or even more.

With chains, sharpen a little bit, often. Keep it sharp so you get the best cut, best power consumption, and sharpening isn’t such a big deal.

Our Best Electric Chainsaw Winners

Our overall best electric chainsaw is the Milwaukee M18 Fuel. You can’t go past the build quality, robustness, power, and raving reviews. It’ll cut hardwood, softwood, branches, and it’s built with professionals in mind.

For a medium-sized chainsaw,  our winner is the 14″ EGO Power+. With the 56V ARC lithium-ion battery system, the power in this electric chainsaw is hard to beat. The 14″ bar is the perfect size for most of your yard jobs and it features a long-life brushless motor.

Awesome warranty on the EGO too.

Our best small electric chainsaw is the 12″ Black & Decker LCS 1240, a little beast featuring a 40V MAX lithium-ion battery. Sixty 4×4 lumber cuts on a single charge for great value.

Which electric chainsaw is your favorite today? Do you have one already? I’d really appreciate your feedback!

I wanted one of those light chainsaws on a long pole to do the pruning. Seems easier than climbing a ladder at my age… or maybe not?
