When a windstorm blew down a 50 ft tall oak tree on our farm property, we used this saw to cut up the bulk of it. It had lots of limbs and none were huge, so we cut up most of the tree limbs and branches with this little saw, which meant that my wife could use it safely. We took turns and cut up that huge tree in two hours, limbs up to 6" in diameter.
TWO CAVEATS to be aware of: This saw was NOT set up properly out of the box. The chain would not rotate and it would have burned up a weedeater if someone who knew nothing about a chain saw had installed it. Also, the oiler was not property adjusted. There needs to be lots of oil flow to the bar and chain to keep down the friction to keep the chain or bar from burning up. Last but not least, the bar oil supplied is less than ideal. I recommend 10W30 Synthetic motor oil, as the oil that came with it was too viscous and it drained out all over the garage floor. Normal bar oil is really just 30W motor oil, and most old timers even reuse old motor oil. I am suggesting that you use new synthetic 10W30 as that worked great.
We have now used this so much that it has really paid for itself and the chain is worn out. We hand sharpened it with a file to cut up some old pressure treated 2X6s to take to the dump, and that is as far as I can take it now until I get a new chain. But, they are easy to find. LOVE THIS TOOL.
Last, but not least, you really need a heavy duty weedeater to work this tool, as it requires a lot of torque. I recommend a 4 cycle weedeater that is at least 27 cc, better yet, a 30 or 32 cc. Our old weedeater died after using it with this tool, but it was on its last leg.
UPDATE: We have had this for 11 months now and it's still working great. We are using SAE 30W oil for the bar oil, or bar oil if we have it, and we regularly get new Oregon 8" replacement chains. I really like this tool, as I can have my young hired assistant do the work without fear he will accidentally cut his foot off, or worse. The chain stops immediately and it would be difficult to injure yourself at the lower RPM, but yet it cuts through big limbs and even medium size trees.
Hurricane Irma came through and took down all kinds of live oak tress on our property, and we used this pole saw attachment to do the first round clearing, as it is easier to use and safer than a chain saw. So we were cutting up oak limbs with it, then loading them on a garden cart we pulled behind the riding lawn mower to take the cut up oak limbs and pine limbs to the burn pile. Worked great. Love it!
The saw uses good quality Oregon brand bar and chain and overall the saw seems to be pretty solidly built for $85. This is definitely a "homeowner" pole saw though - if you keep it maintained, this saw seems like it will last many years - if you only plan on using it a few times per year.
Considering the great value, i would have given it a 5 if it weren't for a few items:
1) The chain was adjusted way too tight out of the box. From some reviews, It seems like other buyers have had this issue too and have attributed it to poor product. With the saw powered off, you should be able to gently pull the chain away from the guide bar by around 1/4 inch. With the saw powered on, the saw should rev up and rev down smoothly with no excessive sticking. The adjustment screw is located parrellel to the bar on the "front" the saw - it requires a flat head screwdriver.
2) More importantly and less obvious: The bar oil flow setting was set way too lean out of the box on my unit. If you don't correct this you will ruin the bar 1st and chain 2nd in not much time at all. When using the saw, the base of the chain and the guide bar groove should have a light oil sheen on it. If the chain looks dry like mine did, it needs more oil. The oil adjuster screw is located on top of the unit and uses a 3/32" allen wrench to adjust - after a series of trials, i turned my screw out 4 or 5 turns total. They do include the allen wrench - mine was taped to the manual.
3) The entire saw housing is plastic. Its NOT cheap "milk jug" plastic, but rather some type of reinforced and filled resin in which I have no reason to believe that it will not be adequate for homeowner use. However, I was a little disappointed when I saw it and would have gladly paid an extra $20 to have die cast aluminum housings.
For the Stihl Kombi owners: this attachment will work. It's not a perfect match - there are little push buttons on this unit that you won't use - but i had no problem, WITHOUT any modification, to the power head or this attachment when fitting it on my KM90. See pictures for proof.
